In The Mess-Age, which I featured on Shika Writes, I explained how we under-utilised certain essential applications on our smart gadgets and how it has made our society a mess.
In today's write up, I would take you through why we really live in a messed world. Years back when we knew nothing or less about social media, life I can say was much comfortable, having no problem with phone addiction but sadly enough, 70% of smart gadget users are suffering from nomophobia (no-more-phone-phobia). A psychological disorder which is associated with fear of losing one's cellphone. At least every 5 minutes, with or without credit, we check our phones to see if we've received a message. Why should it be? Are we becoming slaves to technology or masters of technology?

We are so messed up that we pay little attention to the people around us but concentrate more on our virtual friends on WHATSAPP.

We so messed up that we have over 1000 'friends' on FACEBOOK meanwhile we only know about 200 and the rest just add to the numbers.

We so messed up such that someone living in East Legon chats face to face with someone in Spintex on SKYPE. What happened to the rendez-vous? If you talking about cost then a wedding should be done through SKYPE.
We messed up such that we don't even know Google Maps functions. The most dormant app on our gadgets meanwhile we                                                             wish to know everywhere.

We so messed up that now everything is about 'I' or 'Self'. Why won't we have over a billion I-Phones and I-Pads to take selfies.

We so messed up that even husbands and wives, parents and children, siblings, relatives and others are strangers when they are together. Why can't we have a real conversation and share our sentiments? We easily send 'I love you' on whatsapp and you think we mean it? Let's meet in person and express our love for eachother.

We messed up that now relationships start over social platforms. Why won't we have more divorces than marriages?

Just to crave for attention, we take all sort of pictures and put on Instagram meanwhile someone around you wanting to give you that particular attention is being ignored.

We messed up to the extent that we are the very cause of people's fall in education. Simply because I am not on WHATSAPP does not make me an outcast. So until one is on WHATSAPP, information of urgency do not reach the person until he or she meets a fellow colleague and even if the person is on social media, until he or she gets enough data, the person is not updated. What happened to SMS? Instead of bundling all our airtime for data, we could save some for SMS for emergency cases. Imagine you are in a critical condition and message your dad through WHATSAPP, should his data be off then it means you going to die. But an SMS gets to him whether he has credit or not. So you see, most of us lack reasoning.

We got so messed up when our own Ghanaian celebrities were taking part in ICE BUCKET CHALLENGES meanwhile EBOLA and CHOLERA hung on to our throats and kept knocking at our door.

This is not to bemoan the fact that social media is good. The matter here is how well do you use social media. It was made for us to meet people to help us sharpen and develop our skills. We are indeed living in a messed world which is now making us live in a Mess-Age.
I am a victim, you are a victim, they are victims, we are victims. Let's all get involved and clean up or correct the mess we've made of society.
