"I watched as people battled with the force of the Flood, hanging on to gutters and rods nearby for survival like a drowning sailor. I watched as the flames burst up in the sky like a Chinese Bomb Experiment. With the flames up the sky were souls who innocently had no cause in it. A year down memory lane, what have learnt as a nation?"
I've been asking myself, "what if June 3rd was an annual thing?" Of course June 3rd is an annual date but June 3rd 2015 is definitely imprinted on the minds of Ghanaians as the worst disaster ever to hit a part of the nation.
Family and friends were left in awe, mourning and wailing at the break of the news. Indeed loved ones had been lost and the country was in a state of mourning. Indeed my heart goes out to the families of the victims. That was just one side of it, the bad side.
Now to the good side, oh yeah I mean the good side of the disaster, Accra was clean for months, just three months. People could be seen clearing and distilling their gutters. It was a sight to behold as parts like Agbogbloshie, Ring Road, Korle Gonno, Sabon Zongo and others were being kept neat. A foreigner might have been deceived it could be a change of mentality but ebi "Ghana we dey ooo".......no mindset changes forever and our president rightly puts it as "Ghanaians have a short term memory."
Two months after the Fire and Flood Disaster, like by programming, Accra has been reset to default and the filthy dumping lifestyle goes on. After all who cares? People just dump rubbish indiscriminately, they've stopped distilling their gutters like it's the work of the floods. Take a drive through the aforementioned areas and the weeds are intact like June 2nd 2015.
A big up thumbs up to the government for the continuous draining of the most polluted and unregarded river in the world, the Odaw River. I believe more can be done about it only if the Mayor of Accra, stops campaigning and concentrates on his work or he resigns and gives way to someone else.
So Fellow Ghanaians, if June 3rd was an annual event, is the nation ready to avert the situation or we would keep mourning for something which could have been avoided?
Just ask yourself, "what if June 3rd was an annual event....................?"
In memory of the many lives lost on 3rd June, 2015 at Kwame Nkrumah Circle Goil Filling Station through the Flood and Fire. May their souls rest in peace.
